Simplify Your Life | How to Focus on What Matters

Your life is only as complicated as you let it be.  It is much easier when you simplify things. Chances are, if you feel swept away by life, or feel like you have lost control, you are doing too much.  Do you have to say 'yes' to everything?  No.  Doing too much makes it difficult to give 100% to every one of your projects.  No matter how much you think you can, it’s just not possible to focus on each project when you're overloaded.  Inevitably, some tasks will not end up getting done, may be rushed, or carried out half-halfheartedly.

Let's simplify your life!

Make a list

List your responsibilities on one piece of paper, your hobbies on another, and things you do in your spare time on a third piece of paper.  A hobby is something you consciously do because you enjoy it.  Things you do in your spare time are usually activities that you do subconsciously or whilst doing something else.  For example, your hobby is cooking.  After you have finished making a meal then eating it, you may watch TV whilst your food digests, to pass the time.  

The next thing to do

Go through your lists and cross off responsibilities you are no longer in charge of, hobbies you no longer partake in, and things you have stopped doing.

Now

Look at your list of responsibilities and work out a rough timetable of how many hours in the day they take up. Remember, that hobbies have to fit in around responsibilities, not the other way round!  If you work a 9 to 5 get home at 6;30pm, eat by 7:30pm, and go to bed at 11pm, you will have three and a half hours to stuff your hobbies into.  Be sure to allocate a sufficient amount of time to your responsibilities - which are your priority. Anything less than required is cheating yourself. 

Try it out

Give it two weeks before you make any changes to your new schedule.  Habits take time to form, so don't write off your new simplified life without at least trying a few different versions. Make a note of what works for you, and what does not.

We all have 24 hours in day.  Look around you and see what others do with their 24 hours; it’ll vary I tell you!  If you have problems trying to weed out the unnecessary tasks, ask yourself what the purpose of the task is, how will it serve you, and contribute to your bigger goals and dreams? 

Remember that focusing on what matters, is the key to simplifying your life.
